How it Works

  • Yakisugi was developed in Japan to preserve wood by creating an outer surface that resists fire and insects.

  • Traditional Japanese heat treatment process; charring technique provides a cost-effective way of weatherproofing homes.

  • Heat treatment improves longevity by preventing decay and insect infestation. Wood is mostly structural lignin and cellulose carbohydrates; food for fungi and insects. Heat treatment also case-hardens the wood, reducing moisture content, making it dimensionally stable.

The Artist

Artist Cinnamon Brûlée hand burns and chars the outer portion of each wood surface to create a modern version of the traditional Japanese finish.

A blend of zen environment and spicy energy.

Creativity has often been called the "lifeblood" of civilization, and for good reason. It is through creativity that we express our unique perspectives and make our mark on the world. And while there are many ways to be creative, one of the most transformative is to put flame to wood.

Yakisugi is a traditional Japanese technique for burning wood to create a protective layer of carbon. Also known as Shou Sugi Ban, yakisugi was originally developed as a way to counteract the destructive forces of nature, such as the salty sea air that can quickly damage wooden houses. Today, yakisugi is often used for creative expression, as the process of applying flame to wood can be both meditative and therapeutic.

In recent years, yakisugi has been embraced as an art form, with people using it to create beautiful and unique works of art. From Cornelia Parker to Burning Man, fire is transformative. In this hands-on experience, participants will have the opportunity to try yakisugi for themselves. By applying flame to wood, participants will not only create a beautiful and unique piece of art, but they will also gain a deeper understanding of the noetic transformative power of fire.

Ultimately, each participant will take home their own personalized expression of yakisugi art.

So come join us and discover the power of fire!

I am not sorry my best self intimidates you. That’s on you. Not on me. I am joyful. I am kind. “I comfort the disturbed. I disturb the comfortable.” Yes, I have receipts.

We are all trying to protect our inner core. And we add carbon kryptonite armor. A hot mess of push & pull attraction causing chaos. Yakisugi sculptures represent our humanity trying to protect our inner pulp while trying to withstand what nature throws at us.

Yakisugi” translates to “burnt cedar”. “Yaki” means burnt, charred, or heat treated. “Sugi” refers to the Sugi Cypress tree indigenous to Japan (often called “Japanese Cedar”).

How do you want to show up every day?

Joyful. Laughter. Full of Synchrodestiny.

I help highly educated people remember childlike joy amongst the serious responsibilities of grownuphood.
